McKeon Applauds Move to Simplify College Financial Aid

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA), the senior Republican on the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee, today welcomed a proposal from U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings to reduce the number of questions on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and give students and families earlier notice of their expected financial awards.  McKeon issued the following statement:

“No student should be denied access to financial aid simply because the forms and formulas are too complex.  Although the aid application has already been simplified and streamlined through widespread use of the online application, far too many students and families still choose not to apply for financial aid because the application itself is too daunting a prospect.

“I am a longtime proponent of cutting red tape in higher education, and I believe there is no shortage of red tape in our financial aid system.  I applaud Secretary Spellings for taking on this challenge, and I look forward to reviewing her proposal in detail and working to achieve the simple goal she has rightly set forth: a financial aid application that is student-friendly.”
