President Theodore Roosevelt
When President Theodore Roosevelt and his six children moved into the White House in September 1901, they were crowded on the second floor, which housed family living quarters and offices for staff. President Roosevelt ordered the construction of a temporary office building and a restoration of the White House in 1902. Construction was completed in 1909 and Howard Taft became the first President to occupy the Oval Office. In 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered the construction of a swimming pool along the colonnade leading to the West Wing. Swimming was therapy for the president, who suffered from the crippling effects of polio. 40 years later, President Richard Nixon arranged for a press briefing room to be built above Franklin Roosevelt`s swimming pool. The deep end is located under the area where the White House press secretary stands, and the shallow end is located under the area for television cameras.
