Istanbul, Turkey
The only city in the world located on two continents is Istanbul, which sits where Europe and Asia meet.
Istanbul has been the capital of three empires -- Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman for more than 2000 years.
The first settlement on present-day Istanbul was called Byzantium, which was founded by Greek traders in 600 B.C. The name changed to Constantinople when the city became the capital of the Eastern half of the Roman Empire in 324 A.D. When the city was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453, it remained Constantinople, and became the capital of the Ottoman empire. Finally, the name was changed to Istanbul in 1930, shortly after the collapse of the Ottomans and the founding of the modern state of Turkey. |
