What happened 32 years ago this week that was out of this world? July 18, 2001

On July 20th, 1969, the Eagle landed. While man took a small step, mankind took a giant leap into the Space Age with man`s first landing on the moon`s surface. The Eagle was the lunar module that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin from the command module Columbia to the moon’s surface. The two spent 21 hours, 36 minutes, 16 seconds on the surface. Two and a half of those hours were spent walking on the surface collecting rocks, soil samples, and taking plenty of photographs.

Before they left the surface, Armstrong and Aldrin proudly planted the American flag. As he first stepped onto the moon`s surface, Armstrong proudly proclaimed, "That`s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Inadvertently, Armstrong omitted an "a" before "man," slightly changing the meaning of his historic soundbite.
