There are now more than 600 Wilderness Study Areas comprising 14.3 million acres.
Wilderness Study Areas are largely untouched, roadless areas of more than 5,000 acres each, primarily in the West and Alaska. The area often contains ecological, geological, or other features of scientific, educational, scenic, or historic value. They are managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management.
The Ojito Wilderness Act, which designates 11,000 acres in New Mexico as a Wilderness Study Area, was signed into law today, and is the first federal Wilderness Study Area declared in New Mexico in 20 years.
