New Mexico Delegation Requests Ag Help for NM Farmers and Ranchers January 04, 2007

Record-Breaking Snowfall Hurting New Mexico Ag Community

Washington, D.C. – Three members of New Mexico’s Congressional delegation today asked the country’s top Agriculture official to help New Mexico farmers and ranchers hurt by record-breaking snowfall over the last two weeks.

U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, and U.S. Representatives Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce co-signed a letter to Secretary Mike Johanns of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The text of that letter is found below:

January 4, 2007

The Honorable Mike Johanns
Secretary
Department of Agriculture
1400 Independence Ave. SW
Washington, D.C. 20250

Dear Secretary Johanns,

In the last couple of weeks New Mexico has received unprecedented amounts of snowfall followed by cold temperatures.  This weather is unusual for our state.  Many of our agricultural communities are coping with livestock that are stranded, and in need of feed deliveries to remote areas.  These conditions are having a severe impact on our farming and ranching family businesses.

We understand that the County Offices of the Farm Service Agencies are currently gathering the necessary information to submit to your office regarding their emergency assessment.  We ask for your expedited review of this assessment to make assistance available for these communities, families and individuals dealing with the affects on their agricultural livelihoods.  Additionally, we ask that Emergency Conservation Program funds be evaluated for relief in these areas.

Our citizens have met this challenge with courage and determination that is part of our heritage.  Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
