Wilson Thanks Building Trade Workers for Support of Veterans August 25, 2005

“Helmets to Hardhats” transitions Vets to Civilian Careers
Albuquerque, New Mexico—Congresswoman Heather Wilson met today with rank and file carpenters from UBC Local 1319, and other union workers, to thank them for their support of “Helmets to Hardhats,” a program that helps soldiers returning home transition into a civilian career. The program initiated by the building trades unions is a partnership between the unions, the five military services and the Department of Defense. Mike Shea with the Mountain West Regional Council of Carpenters says the mission of the program is to make men and women in the military aware that they have career options when they leave the military. “This is the time tested and successful union apprenticeship program,” says Shea. “This is a five year “Earn While You Learn Program” which is sponsored by the fourteen building trades unions and their contractors. Many programs also include an A.A. Degree from accredited community colleges. The veterans only pay for the cost of their books, which is covered by veteran’s benefits.” “Construction work in New Mexico is booming and there are lots of good trade jobs available,” says Rep. Heather Wilson. “Our community supports our troops, and supports the men and women in the military who are transitioning back to civilian life. This is a good program, and I urge veterans to look into it.” Returning service men and women who are interested in finding a job through this program should can find information and job postings at www.HelmetsToHardhats.org. Wilson also met with building trades union leaders to discuss issues of concern.
