Wilson Sponsors Balanced Budget Amendment September 29, 1999

WASHINGTON -- Congresswoman Heather Wilson today called for a vote on passage of the Balanced Budget Amendment. As a co-sponsor of H.J. Res. 53, Wilson, along with Congressman Ernest Istook (R-OK) and Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-CA), held a news conference to urge Congress to consider the constitutional Amendment during the 106th Congress. "The Balanced Budget Amendment is a constitutional amendment mandating a balanced federal budget every year, without using Social Security," Wilson said. "Taxpayers have to stay within their budget. Congress should not have the opportunity to run up deficit spending and continue to raid Social Security for more and more federal programs." The amendment will assure that no future Congress can repeat the deficit spending that generated our national debt. The bill constitutionally protects Social Security and guarantees that it could not be used to hide deficit spending. The amendment must be supported by two-thirds of the House of Representatives and the Senate. It will become the twenty-eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the State Legislatures within seven years.
