| Congressional Art Competition Breaks Records |

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – An Artistic Discovery 2000, the annual congressional high school art competition, saw a record-shattering number of entries this year. Students from high schools throughout the first district entered 123 pieces of art in the yearly event. Last year was a record high with about 30 entries. Congresswoman Heather Wilson was the honorary chairperson of the event. Mary Ann Weems of Weems Art Galleries was the competition’s chairperson.
The art will remain on display at Winrock Mall until the 19th. Wilson announced the winners of the competition, selected by a panel of jurors, during a reception held for the participants on Friday, May 12th, 2000.
“Anything that gets students involved in their community and stimulates their creativity is very important to me, whether it’s art, sports, music, or community service. We have more artists per capita than any other state in the nation, so I’m very pleased, though not surprised, at the overwhelming response this year,” said Wilson of this year’s wildly successful competition. “I encourage New Mexicans to drop by the display at the Winrock Mall to see what New Mexico’s talented young artists have to offer. I think you’ll be impressed.”
Best of show went to Elizabeth Loyd of La Cueva for her acrylic painting titled “Potted Plants”. She received a $200 savings bond from the Sandia Area Credit Union and two tickets from Southwest Airlines to fly to a reception in the nation’s capitol honoring art competition winners from throughout the country. Her piece of art will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol until next year’s competition. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners each received a $100 savings bond. 1st place was a pastel titled “Mark of Faith” by Laura Koblinski of Eldorado. 2nd place went to Patrick Romero of Moriarty High School for an untitled piece. 3rd place went to Art Baldonado for his pencil/ acrylic piece, also untitled. These and other winning pieces of art will be displayed in Wilson’s Albuquerque office until next year.
