Congratulates New Mexico Farmers on Growth Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today congratulated New Mexico’s pecan growers upon becoming the top pecan-producing state in the nation. New Mexico has routinely been in the top three growers of pecans along with Georgia and Texas, but in 2006 became the number one pecan-producing state. “It’s always great to be in first place. Congratulations to New Mexico’s pecan growers,” Wilson said. “Pecans are very important to New Mexico’s agriculture. The good work our farmers do is essential to our state’s continued economic growth.” Wilson is a cosponsor of the Eat Healthy Act to increase funding for research and development of specialty crops including pecans. New Mexico’s 46 million pound of pecans in 2006 is nearly one-quarter (24 percent) of all U.S. pecans. - END -
