Wilson Helps Defeat Democrat Veto Override May 02, 2007

Congress Should Not Micromanage Troops in the Field

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today voted to uphold a presidential veto of the Democrat Iraq Supplemental Spending bill that directs the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq as early as July 1 and not later than October 1 irrespective of the consequences to America’s vital interests in the region.

“I voted to uphold the veto of this bill because it required U.S. combat forces to leave Iraq starting October 1 at the latest — and then what? History will not end on that day.

“We now have an opportunity to focus on securing our vital national interests in the region and pursue policies to protect those interests.

“That starts with funding our troops, this time with a bill that does not put misguided conditions on the use of that money that increase the difficulty of the job our troops have been ordered to do.

“Congress should not micromanage deployments and tactics and dwell times. Our sergeants and captains in the field are jumping through enough hoops as it is, without the Congress giving them more.

“I continue to be skeptical that the President’s ‘surge’ in Baghdad will succeed. The only alternative this bill presented was to walk away. That’s irresponsible.

“We need real leadership from this House to focus on our vital national interests. Now it’s time for Democrat leaders in the House to consider the long term impact on the United States of withdrawal.”
