Transforming the Military February 20, 2001

A U.S. flag flies against the New Mexico sun

Dear Friends,

The news media long ago stopped covering the enforcement of the no-fly zones in Iraq. For eight years, American and allied pilots – active, reserve and guard – have been enforcing the no-fly zone – those areas in northern and southern Iraq where Iraqi aircraft are not supposed to fly under the terms of the cease-fire. The Tacos – New Mexico`s Air Guard – are flying out of Turkey to enforce the northern no-fly zone right now.

Every two or three days, allied aircraft will fire on a radar or missile site that Iraq turns on and points at our aircraft. It happened four times just in the new Bush administration before last Friday. The only thing different about last Friday was that the sites they hit were outside of the no-fly zone itself. That triggered the anti-aircraft guns in Baghdad to light up the night sky and make news.

It`s good to be reminded that young Americans are flying dangerous missions routinely in a tough neighborhood a long way from home. If Saddam points a gun at them, our pilots shoot in self-defense before being shot down. Keep them in your thoughts.

Over the next decade, we will rebuild and transform the American military, and we will because we must.

I don`t usually write out the texts of speeches I give, but I gave one last week to 600 executives with aerospace industry that shares my thoughts about the path ahead for transforming America`s defense. If you`re interested in defense policy, we`ve posted it here.

I`m home in Albuquerque this week. Check our events calendar and I hope to see you around town.

Good to be home,

Heather
