Dear Friends,
This week, I was informed by Boeing that they conducted a successful test of a high-energy laser at Kirtland Air Force base. The laser was used aboard a C-130H aircraft, and hit a target on the ground. This Advanced Tactical Laser program has been undergoing lab testing, and this first test in actual operations was a milestone in getting this new technology put in place on the battlefield.
Boeing is developing the Advanced Tactical Laser program for the Department of Defense. Its mission is to destroy, damage or disable targets using lasers with little to no damage to surrounding areas, supporting missions on the battlefield and in urban operations.
The laser testing at Kirtland is just another example of how New Mexico’s three Air Force bases and two National Laboratories are keeping our state on the cutting edge of national security and technology.
The bases and labs work together to advance technology for our military, while also keeping New Mexico’s economy strong. Projects like this provide jobs to the best and brightest New Mexico residents in the fields of science and engineering.
New Mexico plays an integral part in our national defense, and I will continue to fight for our bases, labs, and the jobs of all those who work there.
Wish you were here,
