A Hot Prospect August 02, 2006

Dear Friends, I was in Washington the day Culver Studios announced their plans to build a $75 million movie studio in Albuquerque. That will eventually bring about 2,000 jobs to Mesa del Sol, just south of Kirtland Air Force Base. And this week we had two more great announcements related to the base. On Monday, the Air Force announced that the detachment from Space and Missiles Command that has been at Kirtland for a long time will become the newest Wing in the Air Force. The wing will focus on test and development of technologies for space -- moving things from the lab benches at the Air Force Research Lab into space. This change builds on the consolidation of the Air Force Research Lab Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland as a result of BRAC that will bring 200 jobs from Massachusetts to Kirtland. I met with the Under Secretary of the Air Force for Space, Ron Sega, last week on where Air Force Space is headed. Albuquerque is a big part of the equation. We will continue build on New Mexico`s growing reputation for space technologies. And we also got word this week that the National Nuclear Security Administration will be building a new facility in Albuquerque, also at Mesa del Sol. Initially, they will consolidate about 800 jobs at one location. Ultimately, they expect to move another 200 jobs to their new facility. One important part of this job is working with other entities like Albuquerque Economic Development to market New Mexico. This morning I met with a CEO of a publicly traded company that is considering moving his corporate headquarters to New Mexico. Albuquerque combines a great place to live with a great climate to do business. It makes it easy to sell. Good to be home,
space
