“If you’re a participant in Presbyterian Senior Care, Lovelace Senior Plan, Blue Medicare PPO, or a Humana Gold Choice plans in New Mexico, I’d like to hear from you about why you chose this plan over regular fee-for-service Medicare and what it will mean to you if you lose this coverage,” says Rep. Heather Wilson.

Medicare Advantage Plans in Danger:

Wilson is concerned about legislation in Congress that severely cuts funding to popular health plans in New Mexico. Some in Congress have proposed shifting money from Medicare Advantage to a health insurance program for kids. Wilson supports the State Children’s Health Insurance program (S-CHIP), but says increased financing of S-CHIP shouldn't come at the expense of Medicare.

A House Bill cutting Medicare Advantage to provide funding for S-CHIP passed the House in early August.

"I am a strong supporter of the Medicare program and would not support cuts to Medicare that reduce benefits for our most vulnerable seniors and limits choices for low-income and minority senior populations," says Wilson.

In addition to an annual $54 million in cuts to senior benefits in Medicare Advantage in the First District of New Mexico, the legislation Wilson opposed would reduce oxygen benefits for seniors in Medicare, create more barriers to seniors and the disabled needing power wheelchairs, reduce payments for drugs and services for people needing dialysis, and potentially close the Heart Hospital of New Mexico and similar specialty hospitals.
