Wilson Announces Federal Funds for High-Tech Economic Growth Project at UNM October 05, 2004

Welcomes Progress for Research and Training Facility
Albuquerque – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced $1.25 million in federal funding for a state-of-the-art cleanroom project at the University of New Mexico. The funding, through an Economic Development Administration grant, will help construct the semiconductor processing cleanroom at UNM’s Manufacturing Training and Technology Center (MTTC). The MTTC Cleanroom is unique within the state, and supports New Mexico’s high-tech small businesses. “This important project directly supports the research-driven businesses that keep New Mexico ahead of the curve in technology product development,” Wilson said. “Government cannot create wealth, but it can encourage innovation and create the conditions for businesses to invest and create jobs. Small businesses create nearly eight of every ten new jobs in America.” The project is already under way, and this funding will be used for equipment and infrastructure as the effort moves into phases two and three. “The Department of Commerce is pleased to partner with the people of New Mexico. This investment is a great example of Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s commitment to help the Bush Administration empower local communities with the necessary tools to grow their economy, attract investments and create jobs in New Mexico,” said Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans. Wilson and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development David A. Sampson plan to tour the MTTC Cleanroom site Monday. The cleanroom is used for training of engineers and technicians, as well as supporting small companies as they take ideas through research and development and into production. The completed project will also strengthen New Mexico’s ability to compete on research and development efforts. “This is an investment in New Mexico’s future economy,” Wilson said.
