Wilson: “Corporate America Needs to Clean Up Its Act” July 09, 2002

Congresswoman Declares Support For President’s Corporate Responsibility Proposal
Washington, DC-Congresswoman Heather Wilson supported the President’s firm stand on punishing those who break the law and restoring corporate ethics and called for greater accountability and stiff penalties for those who willfully engage in fraudulent practices. “We’ve had some companies led by greedy people who cooked the books aided by accountants who dishonored their profession,” said Wilson. “That’s fraud and some people should go to jail for it.” In April, the House of Representatives passed two pension and accounting reform bills supported by Wilson with large bipartisan majorities. These bills would provide investors the information they need to make personal financial decisions and to beef up the resources at the disposal of government auditors to root out wrongdoers. The Senate has yet to act on these bills, and Wilson is urging that they do so quickly. “We need full disclosure, aggressive enforcement, and strong penalties to protect American investors and restore faith in our economy,” Wilson said. -END-
