DOE Secretary Spencer Abraham to attend Wilson-sponsored ‘Trade-Mission’ at KAFB April 18, 2001

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A member of President George W. Bush’s Cabinet will make a surprise visit to a “Trade Mission” conference led by Rep. Heather Wilson on Kirtland Air Force Base.

Secretary Spencer Abraham runs the United States Department of Energy and is in town this week to visit New Mexico DOE facilities. In 1998 alone, the Department Abraham now runs spent $571 million in New Mexico with construction, trade, and service companies. Wilson asked Abraham to speak at the conference on his visit to New Mexico.

Thursday’s conference will give local businesses the opportunity to meet with the eight buying entities at Kirtland Air Force Base and learn about upcoming prime contract and subcontractor opportunities.

`The idea of this visit is to take New Mexico’s small businesses on a ‘trade mission’ very close to home,” said Wilson. “I’m especially pleased that Secretary Abraham will be able to join us for part of the conference. The Department of Energy has a strong presence in New Mexico and on Kirtland itself. DOE programs spend more than ½ billion dollars in this state. That means a lot to the hundreds of small businesses doing business with the federal government.”

Government participants at the Conference will include 377th Air Base Wing, AFRL Space Vehicles Directorate, AFRL Directed Energy Directorate, Space and Missile Center Test & Evaluation Directorate, Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, Professional Aerospace Contractors’ Association (PACA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Prime contractors will also be in attendance to discuss subcontracting opportunities.

Anyone interested in attending the conference should contact Congresswoman Wilson`s Albuquerque office at 346-6781.
