Get Your Kicks on Route 66 |

LUNCH LADY? Heather recently served lunch at the North Valley Senior Center in Albuquerque Dear Friends,
It has been a wonderful week of listening and working in New Mexico. This really is the fun part of the job.
I had lunch at the Red Ball Cafe with Barelas community leaders to talk about revitalization and jobs and housing and safety. (I didn`t have the Whimpy Burger, but the green chile was great.)
I loved serving lunch at the East Gate and North Valley Senior Centers and chatting with folks. It`s like any family party: the really good conversation is in the kitchen. And once I finished serving the chicken and broccoli and rice, I sat and chatted with folks and heard their stories. . . about growing up in Chama as the daughter of a logger when the kids would walk home from school for lunch and the snow was sometimes waist high. . . about grandchildren in girl scouts. . . about disenchantment with bickering in Washington. . . about the VA hospital.
And I went to Santa Fe to talk to the legislature and visited the National Center for Genome Research on the way home. (I do not miss that commute to Santa Fe -- driving up La Bajada in the snow!)
We broke ground at the San Felipe affordable housing project just south of downtown and my good husband and I went to the black tie masquerade ball for the Hispano Chamber on Saturday night in spite of the snow. (I borrowed my daughter`s parrot halloween mask. Most folks didn`t know who I was, which was kind of fun.)
But one of the highlights of the week was Monday when the NM Department of Tourism, Dee Johnson and two dozen other groups announced the statewide Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Route 66.
Dee and I got to ride to the press conference in style. Mine was a cherry red 1955 Thunderbird that looked like it was right off the lot, courtesy of the Thunderbird Club. We joined almost a hundred people at the Filling Station Cafe on Central in Nob Hill for the announcement.
After talking to folks from Tucumcari to Grants that were at the Filling Station, I can tell you that the 75th anniversary of the Mother Road in July is going to be a lot of fun. The Flicks on 66 Film Festival. . the national celebration at the Fair Grounds. . . the bike rallies and concerts in Gallup and Grants. . . Al Hurricane at the West Gateway. . . the parades and art fairs and exhibits.
And we will welcome lots of Americans who are rediscovering a wonderful part of our past by touring from Chicago to LA across the Land of Enchantment staying in motor courts that still have neon signs and eating pie and coffee at the counter. Sometimes the journey is better than arriving.
Good to be home,
Heather |
