Wilson Works to Put NM Rail Development on Track March 25, 2004

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that federal authorization is on track for New Mexico’s commuter rail plans.

In an important step, at Wilson’s request the Transportation Equity Act that was passed in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure included the New Mexico rail development project.

“This action helps build the foundation for federal funding as the effort to improve transportation and create jobs in New Mexico continues,” Wilson said. “Commuter rail service is an expensive project for a smaller state to undertake, and we will need to draw on federal resources to make it happen. Federal funding can be a lengthy process and there are many competing priorities in Washington, so it’s imperative to make this start.”

In a related step, Wilson this week also urged the House Appropriations Committee to fund the Downtown Albuquerque to the Sunport link of the commuter rail project, which will create jobs and improve access to many small businesses. Wilson wrote Congressman Ernest Istook, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Transportation and Treasury, to press for $3 million for the rail spur.

“Integrating air and rail service and creating another link to downtown Albuquerque will help our community sustain long-term economic growth and compete for other development,” Wilson said. “Transportation is key to showcasing New Mexico’s economic opportunities and creating the growth climate we need."
