Wilson Bucks House Republican Leaders on Telecommunications Vote February 27, 2002

Washington, DC-Congresswoman Heather Wilson today voted against a House Republican leadership rule on the Internet Freedom and Broadband Deployment Act, otherwise known as Tauzin-Dingell, because it is unfair to New Mexico`s competitive telecommunications carriers, rural telephone companies -- most of which are mid-sized and small businesses -- and for consumers because it decreases their choices. The House Republican leadership is backing the big Bell companies outside of the state at the expense of mid-sized and smaller businesses and consumers in New Mexico. In her remarks on the House floor, Wilson spoke in favor of an amendment that would increase local competition for telephone companies.

“The people I represent deserve a straight yes or no vote on the important public policy issues before us. The rules governing this debate are not fair. It is riddled with procedural stumbling blocks that merely confuse the issue,” said Wilson. “I don’t believe this bill will bring competition, I don’t believe it will create more jobs or give more choices to New Mexican consumers. For this reason, I will oppose my leadership and I will vote no.”
