Wilson Votes to Create Jobs and Help New Mexico’s Unemployed February 14, 2002

Washington, DC-Congresswoman Heather Wilson today voted for legislation to promote economic growth and create jobs as well as help those who have lost their jobs get unemployment benefits.

“Since September 11th, over 1 million Americans have lost their jobs. We have over 1 million families who are worried about where the next paycheck will come from. All of those families are worried about their health insurance. Those families are hurting and we need to help them,” said Wilson. “With today’s legislation, we can help New Mexicans get the health care they need, we can help them get back to work and help the economy get back on track.”

Wilson also highlights the need to include provisions like accelerated depreciation in the stimulus bill. Accelerated depreciation allows a business owner to deduct a greater portion of the cost of depreciable property in the first years after purchase, rather than spreading the cost evenly over the life of the asset. Congress needs to raise those limits so that a small business looking at buying equipment, going and doing some construction, or expanding their computer setup, can do so and be able to grow the business, thereby allowing them to create jobs.

Workers who have been laid off and their families will benefit from increased unemployment assistance grants to states. Unemployment insurance will be extended an additional 13 weeks, and health care coverage will be expanded for jobless Americans through health care certificates that can be used for health insurance from a prior employer or any other health plan. It also contains a health care tax credit that provides a 60 percent credit for displaced workers who do not have access to health care coverage to purchase insurance of their choice.
