Kirtland Construction Strengthens Base March 04, 2005

Dear Friends,

I was out at Kirtland Air Force Base on Friday to thank people for serving and to announce the most recent construction project that`s getting started.

The new housing is coming along well. Kirtland`s base housing was really awful and, using a private contractor and private financing with authority from Congress, the Air Force is building all new homes that are really nice.

Every year we have worked with the base to take care of their most important construction priorities. I don`t try to add on things that they don`t want or don`t need. No bells and whistles. It`s a strategy that seems to have worked.

We`ve gotten money for the ramps to be rebuilt and upgraded electrical power and water treatment facilities. The fire station and the visiting officers quarters and the weapons training have all been taken care of. Not counting the new housing or DOE work, over the last 7 years we have put over 90 million in military construction into Kirtland.

This year, it`s $9.2 million for a corrosion control facility for the 58th Special Operations Wing. That means a paint shop for the helicopters, the C-130 cargo planes and the CV-22 tilt-rotor Osprey when it comes to Kirtland in about a year. Right now, they paint outside -- not good for the environment -- or send planes elsewhere.

Like many in the community, I worry about BRAC. Kirtland is an odd duck of a base with some very special missions. Keeping the base in good shape has been one way we can do our part to keep Kirtland off the list.

It was good to be with the troops at Kirtland and I`m glad they will soon be painting indoors.

Wish you were here,
