Federal Dollars for New Mexico |
February 19, 2003 |

Dear Friends,
Last week we finished up the federal budget for the current year. There`s lots in there, but I wanted to let you know we`ve had some success on projects we`ve been working on for more than a year now.

Federal Help: Last year, Heather and Senator Domenici presented Bernalillo County officials with a ceremonial check of $5 million dollars to help upgrade Isleta Boulevard. This year, the lawmakers secured $1.5 million to continue on to Phase 2.
All of us want more and better jobs in New Mexico. We were able to get federal funds for two projects that I think will help. This year`s budget includes more than $2 million for improved access to Double Eagle Airport on the Westside. As Albuquerque grows, this will be the next epicenter of jobs on the Westside if it has the infrastructure to support it. This money will help to make those jobs possible.
In the South Valley, we were able to earmark $1.5 million for Phase II of the Isleta Boulevard widening project. Phase I started last summer after Senator Domenici and I worked together to secure $5 million to get the project started. The project overall will improve this business artery for the community.
And, for the third year in a row, working with UNM`s College of Education, we were able to help fund their math and science teacher training academies. I`ve met several teachers around town who have graduated from the program. They rave about it and have shared with me how it has impacted their teaching.
Enthusiastic, well-prepared teachers are one of the keys to improving math and science learning among our students. When a teacher is jazzed about math and science and has the tools to teach in a hands-on way, it rubs off on kids.
Wish you were here,
