Wilson Opposes Bush Administration Decision to Curtail Local Telephone Competition |
June 17, 2004 |
|
Will Consider Legislative Fix to Consumer Loss of Choice
Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today said she was disappointed by a Bush administration decision to not support an appeal to the Supreme Court of a D.C. Court of Appeals ruling that eliminates FCC rules increasing competition for local telephone service. Letting this decision stand could reduce consumer choice and raise prices for telephone service.
"I am disappointed that the Solicitor General has decided not to appeal the D.C. Circuit decision that would limit consumer choice and competition in telecommunications," said Wilson, a member of the House Telecommunications and Internet Subcommittee.
"The gains we have made in competition in the local market - lower prices for consumers, for small businesses and even for large businesses - will be wiped out if this case is not appealed. The impact on consumers will be increasing prices and the elimination of choices for local telephone service."
Wilson said she will consider introducing legislation codifying into law the FCC rules to restore competition for local telephone service.
