President Signs Bill to Settle Sandia Land Claim and Bring Federal Dollars to New Mexico February 21, 2003

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced that President Bush has signed a bill that approves the settlement on the Sandia Pueblo`s claim to land on Sandia Mountain and sends millions of dollars in funding for a variety of New Mexico. The Omnibus Appropriations Conference report was passed by both houses of Congress and signed by the President on Thursday, February 20.

Wilson introduced the Sandia Land Claim agreement as stand-alone legislation on the first day of the 108th Congress. She worked with House leadership to include the language in the Omnibus bill. Under the agreement, the U.S. Forest Service would maintain ownership of the land, but will establish the T’uf Shur Bien Preservation Trust Area in the Cibola National Forest. The tribe’s access to the land for religious ceremonies is protected. Public access to the mountain and preservation of the wilderness is also protected.

“This agreement has been a long time in the making,” said Wilson. “It protects both the Pueblo’s interests in the area and the public’s right to use and enjoy this beautiful mountain.”

The Omnibus Appropriations bill also includes $500,000 in continued funding for the University of New Mexico’s Math and Science Academy, a priority project for Congresswoman Wilson. The Academy provides high quality professional development for existing New Mexico teachers in math and science. Wilson secured $1.1 million for the Academy in 2000 and another $850,000 in 2001, enabling the Academy to continue its work with educators.

“Great teachers and involved parents make a difference,” says Wilson. “New Mexico has incredible people who are dedicated to education. This Academy has been a tremendous success, providing our teachers additional tools and knowledge so they can continue to spark our kids’ imaginations, especially in math and science.”
The bill also includes funding for several transportation and infrastructure projects that Wilson requested, including improvements on Albuquerque’s Westside, new buses for the City of Albuquerque, and phase II of the Isleta Boulevard reconstruction project.

“Albuquerque is among the fastest growing cities in the country. We need good jobs and the infrastructure to support them. These improvements are part of that effort,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s priority projects that will receive funding are:

· $2.075 million for the existing I-40 & Paseo del Volcan Interchange and Access Road to Double Eagle II Airport project.

· $750,000 for the Interstate-40/Louisiana interchange Project.

· $300,000 for the Alvarado Transportation Center Phase II Project.

· $1 million to replace buses.

· $1.5 million for the acquisition and construction of Isleta Boulevard from Bridge Boulevard to Arenal Road.

· $1.6 million for the Adelante Development Center

· $4.5 million for South Valley Flood Management

· $1.8 million for Bernalillo County Wastewater Project
