Hastert To Name Wilson To Juvenile Crime Task Force June 28, 1999

WASHINGTON -- Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday will announce that Congresswoman Heather Wilson has been named to the House Working Group on Juvenile Violence. The task force is a bi-partisan group of ten Republicans and ten Democrats who will be charged with identifying consensus and providing legislation which will help stem the tide of youth violence. The group was formed by Speaker Hastert and Minority Leader Gephart and will complete their work by the end of July. "Heather Wilson's experience as a Cabinet Secretary that dealt with juvenile issues gives her a unique insight into juvenile justice initiatives that work," Hastert said. "She will be an important voice that can provide information on what the federal government can do to help local officials who deal with juvenile crime on a daily basis. It is incumbent on this group to prepare legislation that will get the lives of children back on track to be productive members of society." The group will be chaired by Congresswoman Jennifer Dunn (R-Washington) and Congressman Martin Frost (D-Texas). "I am honored to be asked to participate in this important work," Wilson said. "Youth violence and juvenile delinquency is one of the toughest and most important issues we face in New Mexico. I look forward to working across party lines to build consensus on what the federal government should do to address it."
