Wilson Announces $14 Million Appropriation For KAFB Upgrade July 13, 1999

WASHINGTON D.C. -- The U.S. House of Representatives today passed HR 2465, FY 2000 Military Construction Appropriations Act, that includes $14 million dollars to replace deteriorating concrete airfield aprons at Kirtland Air Force Base. The existing aprons which support taxi of aircraft, and are used to park aircraft were originally constructed in the 1940's. "Kirtland runways have deteriorated over the course of time," Wilson said. "This funding will keep the air base viable for the next 40 or 50 years." The project would include demolition and disposal of existing surfaces and replacing aprons. Having these surfaces redone is required to eliminate potential damage and provide safe access and parking of heavy aircraft. "We were successful in garnering funding for this project," Wilson said. "If there is another Base Closure Commission two or three years from now we want to make sure Kirtland has been well maintained and remains one of the best Air Force bases in the world."
