Wheels Little Theatre To Receive Funding October 16, 1999

WASHINGTON -- Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that the Wheels Museum and the Albuquerque Little Theatre received funding in the VA-HUD appropriations bill at her request. The two projects will add to the revitalization of downtown Albuquerque.
"The Wheels Museum will anchor redevelopment of the Barelas neighborhood and be a great addition for revitalization," Wilson said. "The Albuquerque Little Theatre, originally opened in the 1930's, is a historic site that when restored will be a great addition on Historic Rt. 66."
The County of Bernalillo will receive $300,000 for a feasibility study, business plan and preliminary design work for the Wheels Museum, a world-class transportation museum and tourist attraction, possibly combined with other uses. The museum's board is trying to buy the 27 acre site from Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railway. Redevelopment of the area could include restaurants and fine shopping and possibly some residential or business uses. When completed the $30 million project will be a year-round attraction. The City of Albuquerque will receive $200,000 to assist the Albuquerque Little Theater with the planning and some restoration of the Theatre, the first project of the WPA in the City of Albuquerque. When completed, the $3.5 million renovation will complete the vision of John Gaw Meem's plans for the structure. Meem was the original architect of the building. The Little Theatre is a significant landmark in Albuquerque. The Theatre's original design, as well as the proposed administrative wing are outstanding examples of the Meem trade-mark territorial design style. Economic Development Initiative funds are decided by House and Senate Conferees on the VA-HUD Appropriations bill. Wilson made the request of House and Senate Conferees on October 4, 1999. She worked the appropriation personally with the staff of the Appropriations Committee the following weekend. She informed the Wheels Museum that the funds would be set aside on October 11, 1999.
