al-Zarqawi

Dear Friends,

I`m not a morning news show person. I like silence with my coffee. And so, I was walking into the Intelligence hearing room at the Capitol on Thursday just after 7 a.m. Albuquerque time when I got the good news: we got Zarqawi.

We had gotten close before -- very close -- but this time we were close enough.

Abu Musab al Zaqawi was the iconic man of action who led al Qaeda in Iraq. But he was not an Iraqi. He was a Jordanian who trained with Bin Laden in Afghanistan. When we routed the Taliban, he went to Iran and then Iraq. He is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iraqis. He was the man in the black hood cutting off Nicholas Berg`s head.

His death is welcomed in Jordan where he dispatched three suicide bombers into a wedding party at an Amman hotel murdering 60 people.

Using the past tense to describe him is very satisfying.

His death is a solid punch to the jaw of al Qaeda in Iraq and extremist Islamic terrorism world wide. But there are no knock outs in this match. It`s a long fight and we still have lots of rounds to go.

A few things to remember about his week.

- According to press reports, a key tip came from an Iraqi. Al Qaeda in Iraq knows that their organization is penetrated. In addition to losing their leader, their people still alive can`t trust any fellow travelers. Iraqis have grown tired of their carnage and had the courage to turn on the terrorists.

- Zaraqawi`s death overshadows another important success: the Canadian arrest of 17 terrorists who had amassed the explosive equvalent of three Oklahoma City bombs.

Intelligence is the first line of defense in the war on terror. If we can find them, we can arrest or kill them.

Both of these successes came overseas -- on their turf, not ours.

We landed a few good solid punches this week. We need to stay on offense, keep our "eyes" and "ears" open, and keep punching.

Wish you were here,
