Wilson Applauds Deal to Purchase BNSF Shops for Wheels Museum and Expo Center February 24, 2000

Albuquerque, NM-- Congresswoman Heather Wilson today applauded the $2.5 million deal that sets the stage for Wheels Museum supporters to purchase the old Santa Fe railroad repair property in Albuquerque as a site for a proposed multi-use center.

The deal was brokered between museum supporters and the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe (BNSF) railway, which currently owns the 27.32-acre property in downtown Albuquerque. Under the terms of the agreement, the Wheels Museum will submit a $100,000 down payment on the purchase, with the complete $2.5 million balance due in 90 days.

“The signing of this purchase agreement is exciting news for the people of Albuquerque,” said Wilson. “In its current form, the proposed exposition center/museum looks like it will be a tremendous addition to downtown Albuquerque and the revitalization of the Barelas area. I look forward to continuing to work with representatives from the BNSF, the Urban Council and the city to ensure that this project continues to move ahead as planned.”

The agreement was a welcome sign for Wilson, who had intervened with Senator Domenici and secured several purchase deadline extensions to give Wheels Museum supporters time to secure financial support to buy the property. The lawmakers said the museum was able to arrange financing with the help of the Urban Council, a downtown Albuquerque redevelopment group.

Last year, Wilson secured $300,000 in federal funding to help Bernalillo County conduct a feasibility study on the Wheels Museum. The funding, provided through the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) Economic Development Initiative Program, became law in October as part of the FY 2000 Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agency Appropriations Bill.

The securing of this grant together with the enactment of Wilson’s Route 66 Preservation Act form the base of an impressive economic development record. Congresswoman Wilson’s recent successes are reflected in the newly released survey by the New Mexico Business Journal that ranked her as one of the ten most influential people in New Mexico.
