Wilson Announces Funding for Key Scenic Byways Projects April 22, 2002

Funds will benefit Jemez Mountain Trail, Turquoise Trail,
and the Historic Route 66 Scenic Byway

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded funding to New Mexico to enhance some of its best-loved treasures.

“New Mexico is known for its beautiful scenery and enticing national parks,” said Wilson. “This funding will provide useful enhancements to these treasured landmarks and make them more accessible for native New Mexicans and visitors to enjoy for years to come.”

The Jemez Mountain Trail Scenic Byway will receive $62,300 to transform an existing picnic area at the Clear Creek Recreation Complex into an accessible rest area and winter sports trailhead. Interpretive panels describing the byway will be developed and installed at campgrounds, rest areas and visitors centers around the area. A comfort station will be constructed in the Village Community Park with an additional $23,200, fulfilling a critical need for visitor amenities and safety enhancements prescribed by the Scenic and Historic Byways Program.

The Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway will be the recipient of $122,900 for interpretive exhibits which will be developed and installed for the newly constructed Sandia Ranger Station. The interpretive information will be incorporated into an information kiosk planned for the “Crest Gateway” pullout at the National Forest boundary on the Sandia Crest National Forest Scenic Byway.

$200,000 has been awarded to complete a Livable Communities and Transportation Plan for Route 66 in cooperation with the New Mexico Route 66 Association. The plan will include an assessment of Route 66’s cultural and historic resources, the factors influencing past and future economic and infrastructure development, and recommendations for improving the efficiency of transportation along this byway for future visitors.
