Wilson Announces Federal Support for NM Law Enforcement in House Bill July 13, 2007

Wilson Working for $1.875 Million in Federal Support for Key NM Public Safety Priorities

Washington, DC Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced three of her requests for law enforcement projects are included in the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations Act in the U.S House of Representatives.

The bill, passed by the House Appropriations Committee, contains $1.875 million in specific funding for New Mexico law enforcement priorities requested by Wilson. The next step is consideration by the full House.

“Our law enforcement professionals are the first on the scene of any crisis in the community. They should have the tools and training to get the job done, and also keep them as safe as possible in a dangerous line of work,” Wilson said. “We need to keep our focus on preventing the spread of methamphetamine use.”

The Commerce, Justice & Science Appropriations Act:

  • $700,000 for the City of Albuquerque/Albuquerque Police Department for COPS Law Enforcement Technology to improve communications.

  • $200,000 for the New Mexico Sheriff and Police Athletic League.

  • $975,000 for the New Mexico Rural Meth Enforcement Initiative.

Earlier this week, Wilson announced 15 unrelated projects she requested for New Mexico have been included in three other appropriations bills passed by the Committee. Those totaled another $6.4 million in funds for education, health, transportation and other efforts.

“Federal support will help get us closer to these goals,” Wilson said. “These are worthy efforts. I’m pleased to announce we’re making progress on these priorities for our community.”
