Wilson Calls for Congressional Action on Gasoline Price Gouging in Letter to Speaker Hastert September 02, 2005

Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today released a letter to Speaker Dennis Hastert raising concerns about reports of price gouging and asserting the need for congressional action on the issue. Text of letter to Speaker Hastert: September 2, 2005 The Honorable Dennis Hastert Speaker of the House US House of Representatives H-232 Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Speaker Hastert, Average gas prices in the United States have risen to just under $3 a gallon with some portions of the country reporting pump prices closer to $6 a gallon. Following the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., consumers reported gasoline prices increasing hourly with gains of up to 25 cents a gallon in some regions of the country. Shortly after, the House passed H.RES.238, condemning any gasoline price gouging during the hours and days after the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001 and urging the appropriate Federal and State agencies to investigate any incidents, and prosecute any violations. It is an unfortunate fact of life that opportunists will attempt to take advantage of people when they are in need and are most vulnerable. I would like to request that your office make a concerted effort to bring Members together to assess price gouging and develop emergency legislative solutions that will minimize the economic impact of Hurricane Katrina. I look forward to working with you on this important issue. Sincerely, Heather Wilson Member of Congress HW: rc
