Fall Fire Safety Tips November 13, 2007

With the dry conditions in the East Mountain and surrounding areas, Congresswoman Heather Wilson wants you to stay safe and prevent fires this fall with these tips provided by the Fire Information and Public Affairs Center of the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest.

Rep. Wilson recently toured the Urban-Wildlife interface in the East Mountains with homeowners and Forest Rangers.

Cut and remove grasses around your homes
Keep your house clear of tall grasses and any material that may be flammable. Grass surrounding trailer homes should be kept low.

• Remove pine needles from gutters and yard
Clean out gutters often throughout the fall to reduce the risk of fire.

• Make sure campfires are completely out
Do not leave your camping area until the fire is completely out. Use lots of water to make sure that there are no embers still burning.

• Do not carelessly dispose of cigarettes
Stomp out cigarettes, and do not dispose of them in dry or grassy areas

• Fireplace ash should be drenched with water
Pour water over fireplace ash and let it stand for a week. Do not throw fireplace ash on the ground.

• Remove wood from around your home
Clean up and dispose of excess brush, and keep a woodpile far enough away from your house.

• Use caution when welding materials
Keep a fire extinguisher handy in case something catches fire while you are welding.

• Do not park your car over tall weeds
Make sure cars are kept parked in dirt or gravel areas, as the heat from a car can catch fire to dry grasses and weeds.

Remember to keep emergency phone numbers on hand in case of a fire. Have a plan for your family in case of a fire in the mountains or in your neighborhood.
