Wilson Hails Surging Economy; 337,000 Jobs Created in October November 05, 2004

Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today hailed the surging economy that created 337,000 jobs in October. “America’s strong and growing economy has now created jobs for 14 straight months,” Wilson said. “An expanding job market has more opportunities for working Americans to build better lives for their families.” The announcement marks 14 straight months of job creation for nearly 2.4 million jobs, with October’s performance exceeding expectations. October’s numbers in New Mexico are not yet available, but in September the strong trend was already evident. New Mexico`s unemployment rate fell another one-tenth of a percent to 5.3 percent in September. Also as of September, New Mexico had added 18,200 jobs in the past 12 months -- a job growth rate of 2.3 percent, according to the New Mexico Department of Labor’s monthly report on the state`s economy. The report highlights the mining industry which added 800 jobs in the past 12 months for a 5.6 percent growth rate. Wilson regularly tours area businesses to meet with employees and small business owners to have firsthand information about the growth outlook in New Mexico. Wilson supported legislation, signed into law October 4, which extended tax relief for 540,000 working New Mexicans, a child credit for 160,000 New Mexico couples and single parents, and a reduced marriage penalty for 185,000 New Mexico families. Wilson believes that we will continue seeing people hired by keeping taxes low and regulations fair for the small businesses that create nearly eight of every 10 new jobs in America.
