Wilson: LANL Has Long Road to Restore Confidence |

Security at Los Alamos Needs to Improve Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today said that Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL) faces a long journey to restore confidence in the security of classified materials. LANL Director Michael Anastasio, Acting NNSA Administrator Tom D’Agostino, and other officials from DOE and NNSA testified today in a hearing today of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
“The people at Los Alamos National Laboratories make vital contributions to our national security, homeland security and energy independence. The work they do is invaluable and irreplaceable,” Wilson said. “Poor security management clouds that contribution and tarnishes the labs.”
“Los Alamos National Laboratories must restore confidence,” Wilson said. “The situation demands improved procedures, better enforcement, accountability and the intense focus of the new management team.”
The security of classified materials, particularly computer data, is an ongoing concern. A breach of data security last year raised new concerns, on top of a long string of security problems.
The National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) was created by Congress to improve management of the national laboratories. The NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy.
