Wilson Welcomes $1.5 Million Federal Grant for UNM Emergency Preparedness Training Program September 22, 2005

Federal Funds Help Educate the State’s Medical Personnel
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today congratulated the University of New Mexico Center for Disaster Medicine for receiving a $1.5 million federal grant to continue development of a bioterrorism curriculum to prepare health care professionals for response in a major crisis. The funding ($1,491,550) authorized by Congress and through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), is for the third year of five-year effort. HRSA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “Congratulations to the UNM Center for Disaster Medicine for earning this competitive grant and continuing this important project,” Wilson said. “We’re proud of the University’s contributions to healthcare and emergency preparedness, and we know the construction of the Health Sciences Center will strengthen these excellent programs.” Wilson also congratulated UNM today upon notice of a $5.9 million federal grant in continued funding for construction of the Health Sciences Center, as authorized by Congress. “I am very pleased that the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration has given us an opportunity to continue our program of emergency preparedness training,” said Dr. Michael Richards, Director of the UNM Center for Disaster Medicine. “Many of the healthcare providers from New Mexico who have responded to the Hurricane Katrina crisis have received training through the UNM Center for Disaster Medicine and this program.” The HRSA-funded program at the UNM Health Sciences Center partners with the New Mexico State University Border Epidemiology and Environmental Health Center, and trained more than 20,400 health professionals over the past two years. In this third year, the effort adds the University of Arizona’s Emergency Medicine Research Center as another partner. Among the goals of the program:
  • Training health professionals to recognize indications of a terror threat or public health emergency.
  • Training them to meet acute needs of patients, including children and vulnerable populations.
  • Training for rapid and effective alerting of the public health system.
  • Preparing for a coordinated response to terrorist attacks.
