Dear Friends, The new Isleta Elementary School just opened and it is beautiful. The new gym was packed with Pueblo members and close to 300 children who will tell their grandchildren someday that they were there when the new school opened. Just before we started the drive south from Albuquerque to attend the ceremonial ribbon cutting, we got a call from Washington. The President has signed the Esther Martinez Native American Language Preservation Act.
Read the AP article as published in the Santa Fe New Mexican.
The Act recognizes that native languages are dying. Language and culture are inextricably linked. Esther Martinez, a teacher and storyteller from of Ohkay Owingeh understood that. After raising 12 children, she started teaching in the schools and creating materials for the children of San Juan Pueblo -- as it was known for most of her life -- to learn their own language. We renamed the act in her honor when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver earlier this year. The blend of cultures in New Mexico is one of the things that makes this such a special place. We will keep that and nurture it through projects that support retention of native languages. Happy holidays,
