Good Things Are Happening March 17, 2006

Dear Friends,

I spend time at businesses in New Mexico and see good things happening. Steady growth, optimism and good jobs is the constant refrain. I also watch the national statistics pretty closely and there`s good news there too.

Here are a few factoids from the piles on my desk.

  • Americans are working: The unemployment rate has dropped to 4.7 percent, the lowest since July 2001. Our economy has created 4.7 million new jobs in 32 straight months of job growth.

  • The Economy is growing: Real gross domestic product growth averaged 3.2 percent in 2005.

  • Homeownership is at record highs: More people own their homes than at any time in American history; 70 percent in New Mexico.

  • There`s more money in people`s pockets: After-tax income is up 5.4 percent in the last 12 months.

  • Productivity is booming: The average annual growth rate of output per worker since 2001 is 3.1 percent, the best rate since the 1960s.

  • Exports are growing: We`ve had year over year export growth every month since January 2003 and, since May 2003 we`ve had 37 percent growth in goods exports.

To be sure, there are always challenges. We have to make America more energy independent. We have to educate our children for the jobs of the twenty first century. We have to ensure access to quality health care. But the numbers are pretty good at the start of this next American century.

    Wish you were here,
