Grant Programs Will Be Accessible to Native American Governments
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) today welcomed passage in the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee, on which she serves, of a bill sponsored by Rep. Tom Udall (D-NM) and cosponsored by Wilson, to help combat methamphetamine in Indian Country.
The Native American Methamphetamine Enforcement and Treatment Act of 2007 (H.R. 545) allows Native American governments to apply for various law enforcement grant programs. The bill will be considered Thursday by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, on which Wilson serves, then scheduled for consideration by the entire U.S. House of Representatives upon passage.
“Methamphetamine is a scourge, and Pueblos should have the same access as other communities to grants to alleviate the problem,” Wilson said. “This bill makes sure Native American governments can apply for federal funds that Congress sets aside to help fight meth.”
Grants will be available through the COPS Hot Spots program, the Drug-Endangered Children program and the Pregnant and Parenting Women Offenders Program.
