| National Nuclear Security Administration Looks to Add 200 New Jobs at 1,000-Employee Site
Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is moving forward with plans to locate a large facility in the Mesa del Sol development south of Kirtland Air Force Base that would employ 1,000 people in total, consolidating 800 jobs from the Albuquerque area and bringing 200 additional jobs to New Mexico. NNSA is the semi-autonomous agency within the Department of Energy that manages Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
The NNSA`s Albuquerque Transportation and Technology Center (ATTC) will soon seek proposals for construction at Mesa Del Sol. Plans call for a 40-acre site with 3 to 5 buildings. The target for construction completion would be early 2009.
“This is major news for Albuquerque and the Mesa del Sol development, and a superb fit for the NNSA,” Wilson said. “Mesa del Sol has the space they need and proximity to Kirtland Air Force Base. We expect major growth and new jobs at Mesa del Sol and it is increasingly living up to its promise. Central New Mexico is a nerve center for technology and national security jobs and this new facility would be another building block.”
As planned, the project would include facilities of more than 300,000 square feet and would consolidate six functions into one site. The new facilities would provide capabilities for NNSA transportation, security, emergency operations and research and development, as well as replace outdated or aging facilities.
“The Albuquerque Transportation and Technology Center (ATTC) will significantly improve the efficiency of operations for the NNSA as well as the safety and security of the work environment for employees,” said Dennis Reese, the Acting Deputy Administrator of NNSA`s Office of Secure Transportation. “This project also integrates itself into the local community with its positive economic impact and is planned to be one of the seed projects for the development of the Mesa Del Sol site.”
