Wilson Urges Rail Development Funds for New Mexico March 22, 2004

Lawmaker: Project Will Create Jobs

Albuquerque – Congresswoman Heather Wilson is urging the House Appropriations Committee to fund a key Albuquerque transportation development to create jobs in New Mexico.

Wilson is urging $3 million to fund a rail spur connecting existing track from downtown Albuquerque to the SunPort.

“This important development will integrate air and rail service and create another link to downtown Albuquerque,” Wilson said. “The project itself will create new jobs, but more importantly the investment in our community’s infrastructure will bring long-lasting benefits to the local economy.”

Wilson released a letter today to Congressman Ernest Istook, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Transportation and Treasury. In her letter to the Committee, Wilson stated that the important project “would result in enhancing the economic development of New Mexico and bring jobs to the area.”

“Improving our transportation helps our New Mexico businesses compete in a growing economy,” Wilson said. “We know that small businesses create eight of every 10 new jobs in America, and all businesses depend on the opportunity that comes with transportation and access.”

Some other important projects that Wilson is requesting funding for in 2005 are:

· $26.3 million for a transportation plan for the University Healthcare Center.

· $6 million to enhance Mesa Del Sol access to the recreational complex and the new Mesa Del Sol development.

· $4million for the I-25/NM-556 Interchange to accommodate the planned widening of I-25 and relieve traffic congestion.

· $10 million for I-40 Coors Bridge to complete reconstruction of the I-40 mainline and ramps.
