Wilson: General Gordon is the Perfect Choice March 02, 2000

Wilson calls General Gordon the “perfect choice” to head NNSA

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson praised today’s announcement by the Department of Energy (DOE) that General John A. Gordon, USAF will be nominated as the first Director of the newly created National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Wilson, who worked with Gordon during her time as Director for European Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council of the Bush Administration, called General Gordon the perfect choice to head the NNSA.

“I’ve known John for over ten years and the Secretary could not have made a better choice to head the National Nuclear Security Administration,” said Wilson. “John knows the nuclear weapons program and I have no doubt that he will do an outstanding job in his new position. He’s a straight shooter.”

“Senator Domenici and I discussed this potential appointment earlier this week. I will be working with my colleagues in the House to make this initial appointment for a term of not less than three years,” Wilson said.

Last year, Congress passed both a reorganization of the Department of Energy, and measures to strengthen the DOE counterintelligence program. Wilson, a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and one of the principle architects of the Congressional response to the Cox Report on espionage at the national laboratories which led to the creation of the NNSA said, "I believe that the establishment of the NNSA and the reorganization of the DOE will make a significant long-term difference for the protection of our nuclear programs from espionage."

Since October of 1997, General John A. Gordon has served as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Director of the CIA, General Gordon served as Associate Director of Central Intelligence for Military Support.

He has also served with the National Security Council in the areas of defense and arms control including the oversight and completion of the START II negotiations. General Gordon then became a senior member of the Secretary of Defense`s staff and later, the Director of Operations, Air Force Space Command, responsible for overseeing and developing policy and guidance for the command`s operational missions. He also served as Special Assistant to the Air Force Chief of Staff for long-range planning. General Gordon’s operational career was in the ballistic missile program.
