Major Challenges, Great Opportunities at Hand
Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson says that a growing economy provides a good foundation for policy-makers to focus on the next big legislative challenges.
Speaking to the Albuquerque Kiwanis yesterday, Wilson said she is optimistic that the 109th Congress will make great strides on high-profile reforms, such as overhauling Medicaid and simplifying the tax code.
“Big challenges are big opportunities. No one should underestimate the job ahead, but I’m excited about the chance to help shape policy in the 109th Congress,” Wilson said. “We have budget constraints, but it is good to have a growing economy as we begin these important debates.”
Wilson will return to Congress in January with an ambitious agenda that includes simplifying our nation’s tax code and building awareness of the need for an overhaul of Medicaid.
“Simplifying taxes for everyone is not a simple task, but I believe real change is possible,” Wilson said. “We have an economy that has created jobs for 15 straight months, so now is the time.”
Wilson, the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Medicaid Task Force chairwoman, plans to ramp up the momentum for an overhaul of the Medicaid program to turn the focus from managing claims to improving the health of people.
Wilson is personally speaking with many of the nation’s governors for specific information about Medicaid services in their states.
"Medicaid is now beginning to emerge as the next major health care challenge, so let’s open up the discussion,” Wilson said. “We must turn the focus onto what is best for patients, and empower people to take ownership of their health care. We can do better.”
The 108th Congress, which held its last vote this month, completed national intelligence reform and prescription drug coverage for seniors while the nation waged the war on terrorism.
