Wilson Supports Revised Children’s Health Insurance Legislation October 26, 2007

Imposes criticism on lack of Democrat leadership

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson voted today in favor of H.R. 3963, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act. This new bill was reintroduced by the House Democrat leadership and passed by a vote of 265-142. This was little change from the vote to override the President’s veto of similar legislation last week, which failed to obtain the two-thirds majority necessary with a vote of 273-156.

Wilson encouraged Democrats and Republicans to resolve their differences and reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

In talks, Wilson encouraged the Democrat leadership to make effective changes to strengthen the program and give members a chance to study the bill.

“While the principals and changes initially floated by the Democrat leadership seemed to be a legitimate effort to resolve outstanding issues, the introduction of bill language late last night and the decision to hold a vote today with no amendments allowed and no discussion with members who opposed the original bills is either incompetent or an intentional partisan maneuver,” said Wilson.

On Thursday morning, Wilson told Democrat leaders that the bill was unlikely to garner more votes than the last bill if they insisted on their procedure.

“It’s too bad people in Washington can’t get beyond partisan demagoguery to find common ground on this bipartisan issue. Today’s disappointing debate is another example of why the American people don’t think very highly of the Congress.”

The Children’s Health Insurance Program expired on September 30, and is currently operating on a temporary continuing resolution in place until November 16.
