Albuquerque Company, 12 Local Employees, Developing Self Charging Batteries January 25, 2006

Heather Wilson Secured $4.2 Mil for Battery Development & Testing

Albuquerque, NM — Federal dollars Congresswoman Heather Wilson secured for New Mexico will help power New Mexico high tech jobs. Wilson today announced that she has secured $4.2 million in defense funding that will help test and deploy a radioisotope fueled power cell that enables defense and intelligence missions that were previously impossible. And, Wilson says, an Albuquerque small business is making rapid strides in developing this revolutionary technology into useful products for our troops in the field.

Wilson joined employees at Qynergy Corporation today to announce the funding and celebrate with the team as they ship off their prototypes for rigorous military acceptance testing. Wilson says the funding will help support continued work by the company on a contract with the Air Force Research Laboratories Space Vehicles, Space Power Branch. Wilson says the company added two new employees in 2005—a mechanical engineer and an engineering technician. Three new employees were just added this month, for a total of 12 employees.

“This is another example of an Albuquerque company and Albuquerque employees on the leading edge of technology,” says Wilson. “We all hate dead batteries, but that problem is worse when lives are on the line. Albuquerque workers are helping bring long-life batteries to the front line.”

The QynCell works like a solar cell, except it uses safe, easy to handle beta isotopes for energy instead of the sun. It creates, essentially, a “self charging battery” which can operate remotely without maintenance.

“It can extend the life of a battery 10 times, with only a negligible size increase,” Wilson says. “Our men and women in uniform need more power from the battery industry to meet the ever increasing demands of the digital battlefield. Qynergy’s technology can solve power problems for next generation sensors and communications for critical operations.”

The Power Systems Division at Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC Crane) will begin a three phased testing of the QynCell technology to assess the safety, reliability and performance of the application specific prototypes. NSWC Crane, located in Indiana, has premier capability and expertise in test and evaluation of military batteries and fuel cells of all kinds.

“The QynCell is unique when compared to chemical batteries and fuel cells,” says Tom Adams, Alternative Power Lead Engineer. “We are eager to move forward with testing so we can present the findings to a large community of DoD stakeholders who have not yet found a solution to their power needs.”

“We are very grateful for Congresswoman Wilson’s hard work to secure this funding,” says Paul Shirley, Qynergy’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer who founded the company in 2001. “During 2005, we turned the corner with technical achievements that put this technology in the running for potential products. With the funding we are receiving, thanks to Congresswoman Wilson, we will look towards testing, qualification, and address important regulatory and manufacturing issues. To support growth and production, we have added 3 people to our team in the last month and expect to add an additional 3 to 5 people during 2006. Congresswoman Wilson understands how our technology enables critical defense and intelligence missions for the war on terror, and we appreciate her support.”

There are several military uses for the QynCells, including the devices that protect unwanted tampering and reverse engineering of weapons if found in the hands of U.S. enemies.
