Wilson Announces a Significant Increase in Funds for New Mexico’s Disadvantaged Schools May 01, 2003

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today that according to U.S. Census figures to be released tomorrow, Albuquerque’s schools will receive a 25% increase in Title I funding starting July 1. For Fiscal Years 03-04, Title I allocations to Albuquerque increased by more than $5 million to a total of $22,456,130. Statewide, Title I funding will increase by $21 million for a total of $103 million.

“Public education continues to be a priority for the Congress,” said Wilson. “This commitment to education, with the help of the No Child Left Behind Act, will truly make a difference for New Mexico’s schools and the lives of our children.”

New Mexico is among the states receiving the largest increase in Title I funding, partly due to the effort in the state to ensure a more accurate census count. The result of residents filling out their census forms two years ago will show up in the state’s classrooms.

Throughout her time in Congress, Wilson has focused much of her efforts and attention on public education. She has visited over 120 classrooms throughout her district to visit with students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Wilson also runs a high school internship program in her Albuquerque office where high school and college students learn office skills and customer service in a professional environment.
