Wilson Asks DOE to Release Oil Reserves in Wake of Hurricane August 29, 2005

Albuquerque, NM – Rep. Heather Wilson today asked the Department of Energy to begin releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves to alleviate strain on our economy from Hurricane Katrina. The Hurricane forced the shutdown of oil refineries in the area, cutting about 12 percent of U.S. crude oil production capacity and roughly 10 percent of total U.S. refining capacity. The text of Rep. Wilson’s letter to Energy Secretary Samuel Wright Bodman is below. August 29, 2005 The Honorable Samuel Wright Bodman Secretary of Energy U.S. Department of Energy 1000 Independence Ave., SW Washington, DC 20585 Dear Secretary Bodman, On the heals of Hurricane Katrina, oil refineries evacuated workers and shut down more than 600,000 barrels of daily crude oil production in the Gulf of Mexico. This translates to about 12 percent of US crude oil production capacity and roughly 10 percent of total US refining capacity. Last year, the Administration along with the Department of Energy released about 5.4 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve after supply disruptions caused by Hurricane Ivan. In 2002 a little under 300,000 barrels were loaned in advance of Hurricane Lili. On Sunday, sustained winds grew to 175 miles per hour, making Hurricane Katrina a Category 5 storm. Hurricane Katrina cut through an area crucial to the U.S. energy infrastructure. I ask that you begin to release oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserves to alleviate any further strain on our economy. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was set up for emergency situations. This is an emergency situation. Sincerely, Heather Wilson Member of Congress
