Wilson urges focus on education January 25, 2001

Santa Fe -- U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson this morning urged legislators in Santa Fe to work together -- and with the state`s federal representatives -- to improve New Mexico`s education system.

Wilson, speaking to a joint session of the Legislature, said lawmakers at every level face challenges in bettering public schools.

"We must strengthen public education," she said. "It was all right in the year 1900 for less than one in five to have a high school education... but for the jobs of the 21st century, our children are goind to need more.... What was good enough for us is not good enough for our kids."

Wilson Talks Education and Health Care

Wilson, an Albuquerque Republican, said the federal government has nearly doubled the money it allocates to schools over the past six years.

While lawmakers in Washington D.C. might disagree on what the money should be spent on, Wilson gave her opinion on who should spend it.

"It is my belief that schools should be controlled at the state and local level," she said.

Wilson set out some of her education-related goals for this year, including focusing on teacher training, getting all children to read to grade level standard by third grade, and possibly more money for low-interest loans for people wanting to start charter schools.
